19 March 1998: Managing director of the UK“s Pilkington Glass, Jim Franklin, has reportedly bought its Exeter outlet for an undisclosed sum, following the company“s worldwide rationalistaion. The new company is Franklin Glass and Glazing Ltd., trading as Mackenzie Glass, and is expected to supply a large product range from glazing for building sites to mirrors, table tops, shelving and leaded lights. Franklin, who started with the same company as an apprentice over 38 years ago, said that the five-month process of negotiation was a very difficult time for all concerned but the outcome has secured 21 local jobs. “The opportunity arose because Pilkingtons understandably wanted to sell off their “downstream“ businesses, those that sell directly to the public, and concentrate on manufacturing,” said Franklin.
