Finnish windscreen maker Pilkington Automotive Oy, a unit of UK glass group Pilkington PLC, may cut 40 jobs at its plant in Ylojarvi, western Finland, it was reported on 14 November 2005. The company plans to reduce its workforce through early retirement schemes and by cutting staff on temporary contracts. The layoffs are a result of lower market demand, increased competition and the removal to China of part of the production. Pilkington Automotive Finland employs 1,300 in Finland including 470 in Ylojarvi, 125 of whom are assigned to production of automobile related products.
