12 March 1998: Pilkington Australasia Ltd. said it was restructuring its New Zealand operations into two distinct businesses, in line with the international strategy of its Pilkington Plc parent. As of March 1, the major building glass operations of Smith & Smith Glass will be combined with Pilkington“s glass products division to form a building products company. “It is intended that Smith & Smith“s automotive glass fitting and repair business, located in the major population centres, along with the Smith & Smith name, will be sold to Carglass (NZ) Ltd,” the company said in a recent statement. Most Smith & Smith mixed business branches are expected to go up for sale, initially to existing management and staff. Pilkington“s Automotive Division will continue to manufacture automotive glass in Wellington and operate distribution centres in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
