25 June 1998: Dale Chihuly, pioneering artist and teacher of glassblowing, was named the 28th recipient of the Phoenix Award, announced David Difenbaugh, Phoenix Award Committee Chairman. The Phoenix Award Committee was formed in 1971 to recognize distinguished individuals who have made valuable contributions to the glass industry, the committee said in a recent press release. Such contributions may be in production, teaching, science, and include the areas of glass containers, fibre glass, scientific glass, flat glass, tableware, art glass and electronic glass. The committee said that Chihuly was recognized for his ability to draw on all of the properties of glass to skilfully create art. “For some reason, it has taken architects and interior designers a long time to figure out the possibilities of glass,” Chihuly said. Chihuly is one of only three Americans to have exhibitions shown at the Louvre in Paris, France. His glass creations have been featured in both solo and group exhibitions internationally, and his art is displayed in more than 150 museums throughout the world. Chihuly was also named in 1992 by United States Governors “America“s first national Living Treasure”.
