Philips Semiconductors and Philips Components, two separate divisions of Royal Philips Electronics, are combining forces to develop the next generation of LCDs for mobile phones, using Philips Semiconductors“ patented One Time Programmable (OTP) calibration technology. Eliminating the manual contrast adjustment of display modules the new LCD driver technology is the next step to cost effective, fully automated phone assembly; Philips Semiconductors said in a recent statement. Furthermore, OTP enhances the electrical performance of LCDs as well as the visual performance for use in both today“s mobile phones and the next generation of 3G mobile phones, it said. “New applications such as WAP and I-Mode, will create the demand for larger monochrome, passive RGB color, and even low-power active matrix displays. As the leading supplier of display drivers for mobile phones, our patented OTP calibration technology and high level of integration will help our customers to realize their display requirements for phones today and in the future.” said Steve Kelley, general manager of Business Line Display Drivers and vice president for Philips Semiconductors. “By working together with Philips Semiconductors, Philips Components is able to extend its leadership position in telecom displays. Our combined solution allows us to get customized and technically advanced drivers and display systems to the market faster.” said Peter Hopper, managing director of Mobile Display Systems and senior vice president of Flat Display Systems for Philips Components. Philips Components manufactures and markets state-of-the-art flat panel displays, including passive and active matrix LCD and Polymer LED products.
