The lighting and industrial glass plant of Royal Philips Electronics NV in Winschoten, northern Netherlands, will continue operating independently, it was reported on 7 December 2004. A planned co-operation with a Chinese glass producer has failed as agreement could not be reached on a joint venture. The unsuccessful outcome was announced to employees and trade unions in Winschoten on 6 December 2004. The Winschoten factory employs 250 and specialises in the manufacture of quartz and special glass products. Over the short-term it is not expected that the factory in Winschoten will not lose out to China; however competition may increase strongly when Chinese manufacturers improve their production of quartz glass, it was reported.
