The Port Adelaide Enfield Council in Australia has approved a plan by soda ash producer Penrice to reduce its waste discharge into Port River by 80%. Under the plan, Penrice would build four new 1ha settling ponds at its Osborne plant to separate calcium carbonate from the effluent water. The A$ 2.7 million ponding system must still be approved by the Environment Protection Authority. The council will also become involved in a A$ 3 million programme – along with the Federal Government, Business SA and the Torrens Catchment Water Board – to clean up the Port River. The council“s environmental services director, Paul Davos, said the programme was likely to begin before December.
