Pella Corp. has launched a second round of lay-offs at its plant in Sioux Center in north-west Iowa. The company said 86 workers have been laid off. Pella spokeswoman Kathy Krafka Harkema said the lay-offs were necessary because of the credit crunch, which has reduced demand for building materials throughout the country. In December 2008, Pella laid off 65 employees in Sioux Center. In addition, Ms. Harkema said the company will implement a four-day work week for 3,900 employees in its four Iowa plants, a plant in Macomb, Illinois, and one in Fairfield, Ohio. The company has had 495 employees volunteer to take leave of absence while it deals with slow times. Pella makes wood, fiberglass and vinyl windows and doors.
