Owens Corning confirmed 11 March 2009 that it has laid off nearly 50 workers at the company“s plant at Guelph (Ontario, Canada). The Ohio-based company has been scaling back production in direct response to the global economic slowdown. In the previous week, the company laid off 250 employees at its Amarillo, Texas, location. More work stoppages and layoffs are expected throughout 2009 at the company“s operations around the world. “I can confirm for you that employees at our facility in Guelph were notified of layoffs on 10 March”, said Scott Dietz, Owens Corning“s vice-president of investor relations and corporate communications. Mr. Dietz said close to 50 workers will be affected. There are currently about 190 employees at the plant. “In short, it is tied to the economic conditions that you read about in the newspaper or hear about on the television and radio all the time”, he added. “Some of the (Guelph) employees have been laid off indefinitely. We are simply sizing our operation to meet customer demand, which has slowed. Customer orders have slowed in the face of the weakening economy”. Glass composite materials produced at the Guelph plant are used in electronics, appliances, automobiles and recreational equipment, such as watercraft. The company has operations throughout Canada, including Brantford, Scarborough and Edmonton.
