Owens Corning Canada Inc. has become a member of the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC). The company says membership of the organization confirms Owens Corning“s commitment to environmental responsibility. “With our dedication to greener building practices and relationships with such notable organizations as the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute(TM) and Built Green Alberta, joining the Canadian Green Building Council was the next logical step,” said Keith Wilson, technical services manager, Owens Corning. The CaGBC is a group of representatives from different areas of the design and building industry working to change industry standards, develop green building guidelines and create educational tools to support its members in implementing sustainable design and construction practices. In conjunction with the USGBC, the CaGBC is working to bring Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification to Canada. The LEED registration program distinguishes building projects that have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability by meeting higher performance standards in environmental responsibility and energy efficiency. As a manufacturer stakeholder member, Owens Corning Canada will have the opportunity to educate home builders on sustainable construction materials and methods, as well as assist in the development of the national LEED Certification program. In June 2003, Owens Corning was awarded GREENGUARD Certification(TM) by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute(TM) for its insulating products. Owens Corning is also a founding sponsor of Built Green Alberta, a voluntary program promoting sustainable development practices and energy-efficient construction techniques.
