5 November 1998: The price received for glass recycled by residents of Tewkesbury borough in Glacestershire,UK is falling because of a worldwide over-supply of soda ash, according to a recent report. The raw material of new glass is now readily and cheaply available from manufacturers in the United States, and the market for recycled glass has been shattered, the report said. Tewkesbury borough councillors are expected to be told that another factor is also hitting the cost to the council of providing bottle banks. Director of community services Ann Francis said in a report to the environmental services committee that vast quantities of green glass are being imported as wine and beer bottles at a time when the UK glass industry actually wants clear glass. Many of the products put in clear glass containers by British manufacturers are exported and do not enter the UK recycling system. Clear glass is bringing in UK 29.40 a tonne, while green glass amounts to only UK 24.50.
