Asahi Glass Co. affiliate Optrex Corp. has begun post-process production of color LCD panels in China. A second plant was completed earlier in June 2004 at a Chinese manufacturing subsidiary, and post-processes such as IC (integrated circuit) mounting and pouring of liquid crystal into color STN (super twisted nematic) and TFT (thin-film transistor) panels have begun there. The plant will raise production volume to 1 million units per month in the near future. The subsidiary produces 1 million monochrome LCD panels per month at its first plant, and is building an extension there at a cost of JPY 2 billion (USD 18.4 million) to make possible increases in color LCD panel output. It plans to raise production to 2 million units per month in the future as demand increases. Until now, a production site in Thailand has carried out post-process work on color LCD panels, but production has also started in China to meet growing demand from the mobile phone industry.
