Ontario-based Optimax Systems Inc. will, in May, be starting construction on the expansion of manufacturing space that will include the addition of 50 workers over the next two years. The expansion is taking place thanks to a multi-year deal with a Chinese technology firm, Shanghai Micro-Electronics Equipment Co. Ltd., as per which Optimax will be a preferred supplier of precision optics. The USD 4 million expansion provides Optimax with the capacity to meet demand from Shanghai Micro-Electronics as well as expanding its presence in markets such as defence and biomedical, CEO Rick Plympton said. “This is taking Optimax in the direction we wanted to grow anyway,” he said. According to Optimax, it will continue to supply the Chinese firm with optics, along with producing optical systems for its lithography equipment. The expansion should be completed by autumn, manufacturing engineer Mike Martucci said. Plympton said that while the company looked at other locations for the expansion, “this is where we want to be long term.”
