OCI Chemical Corp., based in Georgia, which employs just over 400 people in Wyoming, has announced that it is laying off 38 employees at its soda ash plant near Green River. Site Manager at OCI Mike Hohn said that the layoffs include 28 hourly employees and 10 salaried employees. Officials of the company said that the layoffs have been caused by weakening global demand for soda ash, a key ingredient in glass, which has seen demand drop in the auto and construction industries. Sweetwater County has four soda ash companies, which employ a total of about 2,400 people. According to industry officials, production in the second part of 2008 dropped as a result of the economic recession and Chinese competition. OCI officials said that the employees who will be laid-off will receive pay until 7 August 2009, and are being assisted by an outplacement career transition firm.
