25 September 1997: The US sunglass maker Oakley Inc. said third quarter earnings will not be as high as predicted. The company said that third quarter earnings per share, to be reported on 22 October, will fall “substantially below” an average estimate of about US$0.16 by analysts. It said revenues should be similar to those of the first quarter figure of US$55.2 million. During that quarter, earnings per share were 13 cents. Oakley blamed a number of factors for the shortfall, including a strong dollar which hurt international sales and the strike at United Parcel Service, which disrupted shipping.
