Japanese glass and glazing systems manufacturer NSG Group will begin talks with the workforce at its Pilkington glass plant at Lahti, Finland on the future of glass manufacturing there. The company proposes to end production at the plant although it would continue to process glass there from other group factories. The factory employs over 100. According to Pilkington Automotive Finland, there is plenty of flat-glass capacity in Europe at the moment, owing to the slowdown in the construction and vehicle sectors in the autumn of 2008. In the long run, a glass plant is needed in Finland, as it is not practical to transport glass long distances due to its weight. To restart the glass factory in Lahti would require basic investments worth approximately EUR 15 million.
