Nippon Sheet Glass Co. is to invest about JPY 1.3 billion at its plant in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, to double production of shatterproof safety glass for residential use. The investment will be made during the six-months through September 2005. The revamped facility will have an annual capacity for 1.4 million sq. meters of such glass, which is valued for its anti-burglary properties. Despite costing more than normal sheet glass, growing public awareness of home security has been pushing up demand for the laminated safety glass in recent years. Nippon Sheet Glass estimates that Japanese demand for the product will increase to 2.7 million sq. meters in 2007, 2.3 times the level for 2003.
