Nippon Sheet Glass Co Ltd said it has decided to withdraw from the manufacture of substrates for plasma display panels (PDPs). The company sees uncertain commercial viability for the product because of strong price competition in the flat TV market. The firm said it will incur a total loss of some JPY 1.1 billion to write down the impaired value of its PDP-use glass assets and inventories. The company, however, stressed that the special losses that will be booked from the decision to exit the PDP-use glass business would not affect its year to March 2007 profit forecasts.
