12 February 1998: The Vietnamese government has now given the go-ahead for Japan“s Nippon Sheet Glass to build a second float glass factory in the country. Total investment will be around US$ 145 million, and production capacity will be 150,000 tonnes a year. Nippon Sheet Glass“s first Vietnamese joint venture is Vietnam Float Glass, in which the Japanese glassmaker invested 55% of the US$ 45 million capital and Tomen 15%, with the remaining 30% coming from construction supplies corporations under the aegis of the Vietnamese Ministry of Construction. Vietnam is Nippon Sheet Glass“s fifth production base in Asia, after South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and China. The investments were prompted by the anticipated growth in demand for float glass from the construction and automobile industries, driven by reform-generated economic expansion. Until the arrival of Nippon Sheet Glass, there was only one conventional sheet glass plant in Vietnam, and no production at all of float glass.
