16 September 1998: The Japanese glassmaker Nippon Sheet Glass announced the October launch of the Legato line of heat-cutting auto glass designed to cut energy consumption and recycle more easily than established competing products. Drivers will use an estimated 4-5% less energy to run air conditioners on hot days. The construction of the glass cuts visible light by 70% or more and ultraviolet rays by 90%. It will also cost about 10% less and recycle more easily than the common dark-tinted windows that depend on additives like selenium and chrome.
