Nippon Sheet Glass Co. has developed and planned, on 16 July, to begin sales of a glass for high-resolution PDPs (plasma display panels) that resists warping during high temperature processing. PDP resolution has grown from 400,000 pixels or so in the past to more than one million pixels today. Glass panels that resist warping during heat processing are essential to increased display resolution since they enable manufacturers to accurately place and align a higher density of electrodes on the glass. Nippon Sheet Glass“ new product remains warp-free to 550-600C, more than 80C higher than conventional glass and even higher than competitors“ substrates. The PDP glass market is expected to triple in value from about JPY 5 billion in 2001 to some JPY 15 billion in 2004. Nippon Sheet Glass plans to compete with rival Asahi Glass Co., which currently holds a 90% share of the PDP glass market, and aims to win 30% of the market by fiscal 2004.
