Japan“s Nippon Sheet Glass, through its subsidiary, Nippon Glass Fiber, is to set up a plant in the Chinese city of Tianjin to produce extremely thin glass fibre products for sealed storage batteries for computer and communications systems. Work is to begin on the plant as early as May, with operations to start in August 1998. Products are to be sold to Japanese companies with overseas plants as well as to local battery manufacturers. The company being established is called “Tianjin-Nippon Glass Fibers.” The entire Yen 400 million financing is coming from Nippon Glass Fibers. The company has purchased around 35 thousand sq. m. of land for the plant, which is expected to have an annual capacity of 1,200 tons and annual sales of Yen 1 billion yen after three years in operation.
