Nippon Sheet Glass and Central Glass will begin mass production of glass substrates for plasma display panels (PDPs), according to a report in Nihon Keizai Shimbun. Nippon Sheet Glass will start output from its plant in Chiba Prefecture as early as the start of 2005. The company will convert a furnace currently used for building glass and set up processing facilities at the Chiba plant and a Mie Prefecture plant. The firm will invest a total of roughly JPY 3 billion and plans to supply panel makers in Japan and overseas, according to the report. Central Glass will begin production at a plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture by 31 March 2005. It has converted a flat glass furnace for the purpose and has established a processing base inside the plant. The glass maker started providing prototypes to panel makers in 2003, who will likely decide this fiscal year to begin sourcing the products, the report said.
