Nippon Electric Glass Co. said 26 November 2003 it would launch a tough, light-storing, light-emitting glass in January 2004. After 20 minutes exposure to fluorescent light, the glass is able to emit a blue-green light for over an hour. The glass contains a light-storing powder combining strontium oxide, aluminum oxide, europium and dysprosium. As the light-storing powder is contained within the glass, not on its surface, the material is weather-resistant and durable, company officials said. The price of the glass per block unit is JPY 12,000. The company expects sales in the first year to be JPY 50 million, reaching JPY 100 million after three years, officials said.
