Nippon Electric Glass Co. said it will expand its production of cathode-ray tube glass overseas, but will withdraw from the slumping artificial bone business in Japan. In a recent restructuring plan, the company said it will invest about 15 billion yen in its Malaysian unit to install a smelting furnace with an annual output capacity of 10 million glass sheets. The new facility will start operations in July 2001. At home, the Otsu, Shiga Prefecture-based company will focus on products other than CRT glass, such as glass products for flat-panel displays and optical and electronic devices. The company will cease the production and sale of artificial bones at the end of this year, withdrawing from a business which has brought in sales of some 700 million yen annually. In line with the decision, the company will liquidate its wholly owned artificial bone sales unit, capitalized at 30 million yen.
