18 June 1998: Japan“s Nippon Electric Glass Co. said recently that it has succeeded in recycling cathode-ray tube glass from used television sets. The Otsu, Shiga Prefecture-based firm is the first to succeed in recycling such glass, which will be used in computer display panels, company officials said. Reports say that it has been difficult to recycle cathode-ray tube glass into quality products because the used items come from different manufacturers and vary in colour and ingredients. Nippon Electric Glass has developed a method whereby it is able to make new products with a sufficient level of uniformity using up to 15% of glass recycled from TVs of disparate companies, the officials said. The company is now capable of recycling cathode-ray tube glass from 10 million 20-inch television sets annually. Moreover, the recycled material can be made into almost any kind of display panel, the officials said. The process will be useful after companies in Japan are obliged to collect and recycle used home electric appliances with the introduction of a new home appliance recycling law in 2001, when used colour television sets are expected to reach eight million units.
