9 April 1998: Nippon Electric Glass of Japan announced recently that it plans to build a glass fibre plant in Malaysia. The firm, reportedly investing 5.5 billion yen in the operation, expects construction to start in May. Nippon Electric Glass announced that it foresees a growing demand for glass fibre in Southeast Asia, because a growing number of auto makers and electronics manufacturers are moving into the area. The firm is aiming for an annual production volume of 20,000 tonnes of glass fibre, which is a strengthening substance for engineering plastics used in items such as communications equipment. Nippon Electric Glass plans to first export to the US and Europe, and then, gradually expand sales to Southeast Asia.
