4 December 1997: Japan“s Nippon Electric Glass Co. announced at the end of November that it has established a Mexican subsidiary to produce cathode-ray-tube (CRT) glass for television and PC monitor manufacturers. The new company plans to produce 3.6 million bulbs and panels a year, aiming at annual sales of US$ 100 million from fiscal 1999 onwards. Company officials said that Nippon Electric Glass Mexico SA de CV, with premises near the Mexican-US border, will start production of CRT glass bulbs and panels in the autumn of 1998 to meet growing demand for computers in the United States and colour television sets in other parts of the Americas. The Mexican unit will supply its products mainly to Japanese-affiliated electrical goods makers operating in Mexican-US border areas. The new unit is a subsidiary of Nippon Electric Glass California Inc., a month-old joint venture set up by Japanese glassmaker Nippon Electric Glass and Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp. in El Centro, California. Nippon Electric Glass already has a CRT plant in Ohio, US, turning out 13 million units a year.
