22 April 1999: Japanese-owned Nippon Electric Glass UK (NEG), based in Cardiff Bay (UK), and its principle contractor Tarmac Construction Ltd., have been fined UK 110,000 each at Cardiff County Court for breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act. According to a recent report, the fine relates to the death of Clifford Whitlock, who was crushed to death while fitting safety guards on machinery at Nippon“s plant. Caerphilly-based Westside Engineering Services, which employed Whitlock, was fined UK 10,000.
