At the beginning of September it was announced that Nippon Electric Glass Co of Japan has formulated a glass-filled resin composite with antibacterial properties. The new compound contains a zinc oxide-based glass as an antibacterial agent. The zinc oxide-based glass is less costly compared to the silver oxide bactericide. It is also resistant against ultraviolet radiation and heat. The compound has silica, boria and between 0% and 6% wt. of sodium oxide. Antibacterial glass is usually utilised as filler in resin formulations used for personal hygiene products, such as soap cases, washbowls and toothbrushes.
