Japanese firm NHTechno Glass (NHT) is to invest T$ 2.25 billion over four years to produce glass substrates used in the manufacturing of thin-film transistor liquid-crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) in Taiwan. NHT is setting up the first of four planned processing lines with an initial investment of T$ 400 million. The line will turn out TFT-LCD glass substrates of between 550 mm x 650 mm and 680 mm x 880 mm from glass produced by NHT in Japan. The first line, located at a facility in the Tainan Technology Industrial Park in Tainan City, southern Taiwan, will come on stream in March or April 2001, with an initial production capacity of 100,000 glass substrates a month. As the first line“s output will only meet an estimated 10% of domestic demand, NHT will establish three more processing lines, one a year, over the next three years with a total investment of T$ 2.25 billion. The four lines will be able to turn out 250-300,000 glass substrates a month.
