The New Zealand area of Wanganui is known as a centre of excellence in glass and could, according to a suggestion during a recently-held District Council meeting, soon be known as a centre of excellence in waste glass too. In fact, councillors have approved preliminary work on a resource recovery centre where the public can bring their waste for reusing, recycling or composting, which is expected to be run in partnership with local businesses. According to Louisa Palmer of Palmerston North-based Waste Connections, Wanganui could become a centre for the reuse of glass, and, during the meeting, she spoke about the possibility of Wanganui establishing a resource recovery centre. Ms Palmer also wrote a feasibility study on the same issue at the request of council“s waste minimization working party. There are 4,000 tonnes of glass a year in New Zealand that need to be dealt with. I think Wanganui could become the centre of glass reusage, just as it is the centre of glass excellence.
