A new association for manufacturers of special glass, the European Special Glass Association (ESGA), was created at the beginning of this year by four major special glass companies: Corning, Philips, Samsung-Corning and Schott, under the umbrella of the Standing Committee of European Glass Industries (CPIV) in Brussels. According to a statement released by the CPIV, membership of the new association is open to all other European primary special glass producers, and its aim is to actively defend the specific interests of the special glass industry at European level, particularly with regard to environmental and trade policy. The statement also said that, since its creation, the ESGA has been involved in a number of campaigns related to health and environmental issues, including opposition to the Danish ban on lead and taking a public stance on the European Directive on Electrical and Electronic Waste. In the area of trade policy, ESGA“s priorities are discussions on tariff and non-tariff barriers at the next WTO meeting, as well as the Information Technology Agreement.
