Glass manufacturers from Murano, Italy, have set up a New York office of the Promovetro consortium in an effort to protect the trademark that guarantees the product was made on the island of Murano, near Venice. Murano has been an important center for glass making since the year 1291. Gianluca Seguso, president of Seguso Viro, maker of quality Murano giftware, will represent the group in the United States. “It“s not a seal of quality but a seal of origin,” Seguso said. The consortium, comprising nearly 80% of Murano“s glassmakers was created to combat imitations made in Mexico, China and elsewhere, he noted. Promovetro has a telephone service line, a post office box and a web site in the pipeline.
