British industrial materials group Morgan Crucible Company plc said on 6 March that Nigel Young has been appointed finance director with effect from 8 April 2002. Mr Young, an economics graduate who came to engineering via accountancy firms Peat and PwC, has more than 15 years of industry experience as finance director at first United Scientific Holdings (later Alvis), followed by First Technology and, from 1997 until December, Babcock International. He will be asked to draw fully on his experience at these companies, all of which have undergone a restructuring, as he tackles his job at Morgan Crucible. Morgan, which reported its 2001 full-year results on 12 March, is a leading provider of ceramic, magnetic and carbon-based products to industries from steel to rail to semi-conductors. In 2000, it made pre-tax profits of GBP 92.6 million on sales ofGBP 1.05 billion. Following a round of restructuring that ended last year, it has about 12,500 employees.
