On 13 May, Vetropack Moravia Glass Kyjov (VMG) of the Czech Republic started operation of a new Kc 498 million glass-melting tank producing 350 tonnes of molten glass daily, thus raising capacity by 15%. Besides raising production capacity, VMG says the tank will be better for the environment, cutting NOx pollution from 1,980 mg/cubic metre to 530 mg/cubic metre. In the first quarter of this year, VMG produced 117.2 million bottles and jars, 23.8 million less than in the same period last year. Total sales in the period also dropped from Kc 120.8 million to Kc 120.3 million. Domestic sales in the period amounted to 866 million bottles and jars, down 1.5 million, while exports rose slightly to Kc 33.7 million. Total receipts in the first quarter reached Kc 296.4 million, approximately the same level as in the same period last year. For the whole of this year, VMG plans sales of Kc 1.482 billion against last year“s Kc 1.379 billion while next year they are set to increase to Kc 1.698 billion and in 1999 to Kc 1.859 billion. In 1996, exports, mainly to other eastern European nations, accounted for 26% of VMG“s output. Due to the investment in the new tank, the company expects to report a loss of Kc 12 million in 1997. Next year, however, it foresees a profit of Kc 61 million and in 1999 a profit of Kc 167 million.
