Glaverbel subsidiary Miroiterie Hirtz, a mirror manufacturer based in the French Alsace region, has developed a coating to keep vehicle rear-view mirrors clean, it was reported on 18 July 2003. Called HydroSafe, the coating is an an invisible film applied to the rear-view mirror surface, which can reduce the amount of light reflection by 45% and hence limit the dazzle from headlights, the company said. Organic dirt is removed by the photocatalytic action of the coating, Glaverbel said. Miroiterie Hirtz was set up in 1884 and became part of Glaverbel in 1989. Miroiterie Hirtz produces mirrors for the automotive and cosmetics industries. The company also manufactures special products, including a wide range of thin films in materials such as chromium, aluminium, tin, titanium, silicon dioxide, and indium tin oxide. Miroiterie Hirtz currently employs 250. The company posted turnover of EUR 25 million (USD 28 million) for 2002.
