The Mexican glass industry is still having to face unfair competition from Asian imports. As a result, sector leaders recently asked the government to take action to stop imports growing too quickly as sales have already dropped more than 20% in domestic companies. Alfonso Serna Villarreal, vice president of the Association of Industrial Glass Companies in Nuevo Leon, said it was urgent that the government provide aid to the glass sector by applying tariff obstacles. The president of the National Assembly Plant Industry Chamber (Canacintra) in Nuevo Leon, Eduardo Garza, said that glass imports were originating mainly from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand and if nothing were done, employment in the industry would fall sharply. He said that the price of these Asian imports was too low, at a third or a quarter of international standards. Garza said that glass industry exports had declined 50% because of this unfair competition.
