Musa Aman, chief minister of the Malaysian state of Sabah, has urged foreign glass manufacturers to explore opportunities in the state, which is known for its high quality silica sand resources for glass making. He made the call at the opening of the 32nd Asean Glass Conference in Sabah on 9 October 2008 and added that the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) also offered manufacturers many opportunities to invest in the state. “Sabah is a state which has seen rapid developments in recent years and will continue to grow in time to come”, said the Sabah chief minister. Sabah is located on the island of Borneo. “With the SDC firmly in place, we are embarking on tourism, manufacturing and agriculture as engines of growth during the 18-year plan“s time frame. Many projects have been outlined and these provide opportunities for glass manufacturers to promote or supply their products”, he added. When asked later if any of the foreign participants had voiced interest in investing in the SDC, Mr. Musa said they were keen but the potential for the industry in Sabah must be studied first to see if it was viable. Asean Federation of Glass Manufacturers“ chairman Henry Susanto said there was potential for Asean countries to produce good quality glass and export it worldwide and Sabah could become a key player if the industry was expanded there. The conference was attended by over 200 delegates from the glass industry and focuses on the challenges the industry is facing with the rise of global energy prices.
