To profit from the rapidly expanding market for specially manufactured architectural glass, the Mahaveer Group, based in Chennai (former Madras, south east India), has set up Mahaveer Safety Glass Co. (P) Ltd. in the SIPCOT industrial complex at Irungattukottai. The new company manufactures architectural glass in technical collaboration with AGP Pte Ltd, Singapore, a premier architectural glass producer in the Asia Pacific region. The INR 150 million (USD 3.33 million/ EUR 2.76 million) plant began commercial production recently. Mahaveer has been importing a wide range of glasses for a host of customers in the corporate sector and for government-promoted industrial parks. “With the combined expertise of AGP and the marketing network of Mahaveer group, Mahveer Safety Glass will be able to provide superior quality of architectural safety glass products for all applications,” said Mr Ashok B Jain, executive director. He said since the company sourced from float glass producers around the world and was able to offer all the standard substrate colours such as clear, green, grey, bronze, blue and azurlite. “Besides this array of substrate options, the company also offers a wide variety of coatings for high performance reflective glass, frits, interlayers and opacifiers. We have in-house fabrication and processing capabilities that enable us to coat, heat treat, laminate, insulate, silkscreen and sandblast.” The company has also installed what Mr Jain calls “India“s first jumbo-sized bent glass toughening line”. Branded as “envro-Bent“, it toughens glass to suit specific applications like curved external facades in structural glazing or curved internal partitions.
