14 January 1999: The US firm LightPath Technologies, Inc. has signed exclusive agreements for the right to commercialize two separate fibreoptic switch technologies, the company said in a recent press release. The agreements, said the company, will allow LightPath to broaden and accelerate its planned introduction of fibreoptic switching products to the telecommunications market. The two switch technologies were licensed from Herzel Laor of Boulder, Colorado, founder and former president of Astarte Fiber Networks, and a renowned expert in telecommunications switching technology. Lightpath said that fiberoptic switches perform the function of switching a signal in one fiber to another fiber. Applications for this type of switch include component test and measurement systems, as well as monitoring, protection and restoration of fiberoptic communication networks. The licensing of these technologies enables LightPath to bring to market enhanced-value products, in addition to its existing component level products, which is a key strategic objective of the company. “The licensing of these technologies represents the next step in the execution of our business plan; the development of leading-edge telecommunications bandwidth solutions. These technologies, coupled with our existing collimators, improve LightPath“s product offerings and allow us to continue to move into more sophisticated telecommunications solutions. We are pleased with the possibilities that lie ahead,” said Donald E. Lawson, president and chief executive officer of the company.
