Toughened glass factory “Transparence” has already started operation said plant production manager Nikolajs Sumeiko at the official opening ceremony on 23 October 2003. The event was attended by the Mayor of Riga, Gundars Bojars. “Transparence” will be making cheaper toughened glass for the local market, reducing the reliance on imports, Sumeiko said. Managing director Vladimirs Frolovs is convinced that demand exists from local businesses. Toughened glass supply contracts have already been signed with several Russian companies and work on contracts for Central Europe is underway. However, the local market is the top priority, Frolovs said. Construction of the plant has been financed by a loan and foreign investors, Frolovs said. New equipment has been installed at the plant. “Shopping centers are often opened in Riga, production facilities – much rarer,” Riga Mayor Gundars Bojars said during the ceremony. Praising the spirit of adventure that had lead to the realisation of the project, Bojars wished the enterprise every success. “Transparence” will produce 3,000 tons of toughened glass a year, partly replacing imports.
