US Lancaster Colony Corp. said at the beginning of November that quarterly profit edged up on sales gains in its automotive and speciality foods businesses, even as glassware and candle sales slumped. The company also said it was moving its glassware manufacturing to its Sapulpa, Oklahoma, plant from its Dunkirk, Indiana, facility, a move affecting 240 jobs. Warehousing and distribution operations will remain in Dunkirk, the company said. Lancaster said it will take a charge of about 8 cents a share in its fiscal second quarter and said the move should help operating income no later than the fiscal year beginning in July. Profit for the first quarter ended 30 September rose to US$ 20.6 million, or 56 cents a share, compared with US$ 20.3 million, or 55 cents a share, in 2001. Sales rose to US$ 275.8 million from US$ 264.9 million in 2001.
