For the second time since the Shasta Lake, California plant opened in 2002, Knauf Insulation will halt output to rebuild the glass-melting furnace. But unlike four years ago, the first time the furnace was shut off for maintenance, Knauf will use the down time to also upgrade its manufacturing line to enhance efficiency, company spokesman Mike Lynam said 17 May 2010. Knauf will invest a total of USD 16 million on the upgrades, Mr. Lynam said. Knauf“s manufacturing line will shut down for about nine weeks during the furnace rebuild, which is scheduled to begin 30 June 2010 and be completed by early September. The shutdown will affect about 50 of the plant“s 125 full-time employees. The affected workers will be temporarily laid off but will be able to collect unemployment during that time, said Iain James, director of operations at the plant.
