Khrustalny Zavod, Russia“s major producer of cut glass and glassware in the city of Gus-Khrustalny (Vladimir region), is to increase the output of its drinking glasses. According to plant CEO Alexander Kashkin, market research showed that the demand for drinking glasses is rising in Russia. The plant put back into operation a shop for mechanical production of glassware, which was stopped four years ago, and plans to buy equipment in Germany. The project will be financed with a US$ 3-million credit, which the plant hopes to solicit. Khrustalny Zavod plans to produce nearly 200 million glasses per year and boost annual sales by 50% to R 300 million. According to a report, 15 large plants produced thin glassware in Russia in Soviet times, and that since then, all of them have switched over to other commodities because the production of glassware became unprofitable due to competition from importers.
