Kemira, the Finnish chemicals group, said in December 2001 that it intended to pay US$ 138 million for Vinings Industries, a leading supplier of speciality chemicals for the pulp and paper industry in North America. The move comes three weeks after a Kemira merger with the Nordic chemical groups Dynea and Sydsvenska Kemi collapsed in the face of political opposition in Finland, and is a sign the company still aims to grow in the paper and pulp industry. Kemira also said it expected operating profit in 2002 to exceed the 2001 level despite global economic difficulties.
