Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding in April 2005 on the setting-up of a float glass plant in Kazakhstan, the Kyzylorda region has been chosen as the location for the joint venture involving Pilkington Plc. According to S. Kozhaniyazov, director of the regional business and industry department, Kyzylorda has the largest quartz sand deposit in Kazakhstan. The silica oxide content of the sand is 98%. The project is part of the industrial innovation strategy for the development of Kazakhstan, 2003-2015. In accordance with the feasibility study for the plant submitted by the UK company, output capacity is to reach 180,000 tons of glass products per annum. The aim is start production of flat glass of various types including mirrors and autoglass by the end of 2007. Around 600 locals will be recruited and trained to work at the plant.
