15 April 1999: Japanese sheet glass manufacturers raised production by 3.5% in January, the second consecutive month rise, according to a report compiled by the Flat Glass Manufacturers Association of Japan. The manufacturers produced 2.57 million boxes of sheet glass, each one of which contains the equivalent of 9.29 square metres of 2 mm-thick glass. Shipments, however, extended their string of declines to 19 months, dropping 6.2% on the year to 2.12 million boxes. Inventory fell 17.9% to 4.68 million boxes, continuing a trend of decreases since June 1998. A decline in auto production resulted in a second month of lower safety glass output, which fell 3% to 3.22 million square metres. Production of pair glass rose for the third consecutive month, climbing 12.8% to 401,000 square metres.
