Japan Metals and Chemicals Company, Ltd. (JMC) and Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. announced at the end of January that they had recently signed an agreement to pursue a joint development programme pertaining to hydrogen storage systems that utilize metal hydride alloys for fuel cell markets. This is an important step to facilitate development of a viable hydrogen infrastructure for the emerging hydrogen based economy. A metal hydride is a metal alloy system that is capable of absorbing and storing hydrogen at moderate pressures near room temperature. This stored hydrogen may be released as required to provide power for a wide variety of fuel cell applications. Storage of hydrogen at moderate pressure and ambient temperature is a more energy-efficient and cost-effective method for these applications than current techniques for storing hydrogen, that use either very high pressure or very cold temperatures. Hydrogen is receiving much attention as a source of environmentally friendly energy. Fuel cells use hydrogen to produce electric power and heat, with water as the only emission. Hydrogen may also be produced and used as a method of storing renewable energy from hydropower, solar energy, wind power, and geothermal energy. The lack of a viable hydrogen delivery infrastructure is a hurdle to commercialization of fuel cells. JMC and Air Products are addressing this need with this joint development agreement. JMC has over 20 years of research and development experience with metal hydride alloys and applications for metal hydrides including hydrogen storage, transportation, and heat pumps. JMC began producing metal hydride alloys for commercial sale in 1992 and has subsequently grown to become one of the largest global suppliers of metal hydride alloys. Air Products is the world“s largest supplier of merchant hydrogen. An industry leader in hydrogen safety engineering and global leader in hydrogen production and distribution, Air Products is the sole provider of liquid hydrogen for America“s Space Shuttle missions. Air Products“ hydrogen market experience dates back to the 1950s and today includes over 1,200 hydrogen installations and 340 miles of hydrogen pipeline systems worldwide.
