4 December 1997: Italy“s national packaging institute, Istituto Italiano Imballaggio, recently announced a number of initiatives in which it is involved. The first of these, on which the institute had been working for some time, is a three-year course in packaging technology. The new course, with 30 students, got under way at the University of Parma, Italy, in October. A key role in setting up the course was played by the Associazione per lo Sviluppo della Cultura del Packaging (Association for the Advancement of Packaging Culture). The institute has also been involved in talks with two major Italian museums, the “Museo della Scienza e della Tecnica” in Milan and the “Museo Aldini e Valeriani” in Bologna, on the possibility of a permanent exhibition for the winning projects in the institute“s “Oscar dell“Imballaggio” packaging awards scheme, the 1998 edition of which is being organised in collaboration with the Italian financial daily paper Il Sole 24 ore, Ipack-Ima and AC Nielsen. The packaging “Oscars” are awarded in seven categories: – packaging in direct contact with the product (foodstuffs, detergents, toys, etc.); – packaging accessories (labels, stoppers, filling machines, etc.); – presentation packaging (blister packs, trays, dispensers, etc.); – transport packaging (crates, pallets, drums, film, etc.); – prototypes (projects for new types of packaging not yet in production); – “Prestige and Communications” (top-of-the-range, deluxe packaging using innovative design and communication features); – environmentally-friendly packaging (products which reduce weight and volume, which are reusable, recyclable or easy to dispose of, etc.). Winning projects will be presented at the 1998 edition of the Mediterpack packaging industry trade fair.
